Tau was designed & built by Colin E.Philp, and launched on Aug 11, 1972 in Lami, Suva. She is a 90 foot ketch of steel and fibreglass and has five cabins in total. Tau can sleep 10-13 people depending on sleeping configurations, but is most comfortable with around six or eight. For most of the circumnavigation the crew numbers will be five or eight people only.

Tau had been built specially for extended cruising around the world by Colin E.Philp but Colin had never got round to doing a circumnavigation. He had cruised the Pacific instead including many of the Fijian Islands. The yacht has visited Kiribati, PNG, Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, French Polynesia, Solomons and Christmas Island.
